Castleford

Castleford, is a town located in West Riding of Yorkshire. It was an ancient Roman town before it became a major industrial hub. The M62 motorway is near Wakefield. North of Castleford, the River Calder meets the River Aire and Aire and Calder Navigation Canal.

The town that we know today was shaped by its growth during the Industrial Revolution. In just 90 years, the population grew from less than 1,000 to more than 14,000 people. Castleford's mining industry was the main reason for this growth. While mining had taken place in the area as early as the 16th century deep mining began in 1868, with the opening of the Wheldale Pit. The area was also a center for glass, pottery, and chemicals, although to a lesser degree today.
